Back in 2020, reports falsely claimed that Gates had purchased a 112-meter hydrogen concept yacht called Project Aqua. That vessel was never built. The real project was BREAKTHROUGH, developed quietly by Feadship over several years.
Early 2025 there were rumors of a sale to Canadian billionaire Patrick Dovigi, but Bill Gates remained the owner, and the yacht was still listed for sale. In September 2025 however, several media claimed that the deal was finalized, and stated Patrick Dovigi as the new owner of Breakthrough.

Hydrogen Fuel Cells
Powered by cryogenic hydrogen stored at -253°C, the vessel runs 16 fuel cells that generate electricity for onboard systems. Its only exhaust? Water vapor.
Energy Flexibility
When hydrogen isn’t available, the yacht can switch to methanol, and it includes biofuel-capable MTU generators to back up its power system.
Quiet and Emission-Free
BREAKTHROUGH can stay at anchor for a full week or cruise at 10 knots without producing any carbon emissions or noise pollution.
Cryogenic Storage Breakthroughs
Feadship developed custom double-walled tanks to safely store hydrogen — an engineering feat that added 4 meters to the yacht’s length.
Heat and Energy Recovery
Waste heat from the engines powers heated floors, pools, and Jacuzzis. A smart HVAC system regulates climate only in occupied areas, minimizing energy use.

Maybe in the summer of 2025 we’ll see Bill Gates’ daughter Phoebe Adele Gates on board the superyacht.
