Luxury Yacht Ebony Shine

Feadship Ebony Shine

Ebony Shine was delivered in 2008 by Feadship as Ocean Victory for Russian billionaire Viktor Rashnikov. Ebony Shine can accommodate 12 guests in 6 cabins and has a crew of 21. She is powered by two Caterpillar engines which give her a top speed of 16.5 knots and a transatlantic range. At delivery she was the largest Feadship in terms of volume.

Viktor Rashnikov

Rashnikov is chairman and majority shareholder at the Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel Works (MMK). His net worth is estimated at US$ 6.8 billion. He sold the Feadship when his new 140 meter yacht - now named Ocean Victory- was delivered by Fincantieri. The yacht was sold to Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue, Vice President of Equatorial Guinea.

Alberto Pinto Interior

The yacht’s interior is designed by Alberto Pinto Design. The idea was to create a nautical style with a ‘summer house’ atmosphere. Some of her interior features include a large cinema, a large contra-flow swimming pool, a sauna and steam room and a fully equipped cinema. The owners stateroom includes two baths, two dressing rooms and an office.

2016 Refit at Feadship

In 2016 the yacht was send to Feadship’s facilities in Makkum for a 8 month extensive refit. When she was planning to leave the Netherlands, the yacht was confiscated by the Dutch Authorities and was brought to the Dutch Navy Base in Den Helder, the Netherlands.

2016 Confiscation by Dutch Authorities

Dutch media reported that the yacht was confiscated on behalf of a Swiss public prosecutor, following a fraud investigation. It seems that the lifestyle of Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue did not fit his official minister salary of US$ 3,500 per month.

Legal Procedure

The Government of Equatorial Guinea started a legal procedure in the Netherlands, at a Court in the Dutch town of Zwolle. The Ambassador of EG was present at the court. The Government of EG demands that the yacht Ebony Shine should be released by Dutch authorities, claiming that the yacht is actually owned by the Armed Forces of Equatorial Guinea and that the yacht is part of the country’s defense system. The Dutch authorities replied that the yacht’s schedule included ‘diving and swimming’, which is a bit strange for a defense vessel. Also a document was found on board mentioning the ‘owners birthday’, which was actually the birthday of Teodoro Obiang Mangue. The Government of EG claimed that both Obiang Mangue and the yacht should receive ‘immunity’. The Dutch court will rule in April 2017.

Outcome of the Legal Procedure

On April 13th 2017 the Dutch court decided that the confiscation of Ebony Shine was done according to Dutch law and that all appropriate legal procedures were followed. The court denied the release of the yacht. It was disclosed that the yacht is formally owned by a company Named DARA, based on the Marshall Islands. (And that the Ministry of Defense owns all shares in DARA. In a second decision the court ordered that all confiscated goods (taken from the yacht) should be transferred to the Swiss prosecutor. The prosecutor will use the goods for a criminal case of money laundering against Teodoro.

Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue

Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue is the Vice-President of Equatorial Guinea. He is the son of Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, President of Equatorial Guinea. For a few years he was Minister of Agriculture and Forestry and was promoted to First Vice-President in June 2016. The Republic of Equatorial Guinea is a country located in Central Africa. Since the mid-1990s, Equatorial Guinea has become one of sub-Sahara's largest oil producers. With a population of almost two million, it is the richest country per capita in Africa

Net Worth

The net worth of Teodoro and his family is estimated at more than US$ 600 million. The source of wealth is probably the oil, as Equatorial Guinea is an oil rich country.

Fraud Investigation

In 2016, Swiss prosecutors opened an investigation on Teodorin Obiang after 8 landings with his private jet in Geneva. Eleven luxury vehicles were seized at Geneva airport as part of this procedure. Before that in 2011 and 2012 both USA and French authorities filed compaints against Teodorin, based on spending US$315 million on properties and luxury goods, funded by an official salary of less than $100,000 per year.  He was indicted by the justice on several counts of corruption and money-laundering. Mansions in Paris and Malibu were confiscated and sold at auction.

Lurssen yacht Ice

A French news site reports that Obiang Mangue also owns the Lurssen Yacht Ice, which he purchased in 2015 for US$ 150 million from Suleiman Kerimov. According to an official Equatorial Guinea statement, both yachts Ebony Shine and Ice are owned by the Government of Equatorial Guinea.

Dassault Falcon private jet

Teodoro and his father owns a Dassault Falcon 900B private jet, with registration 3C-ONM (‘ONM stands for Obiang Nguema Mbasogo’). A  Falcon 900 has a list price of US$ 40  million.
