The motor yacht Serene is one of the largest yachts in the world. With a length of 134 meters (or 439 ft). According to official (mortgage) documents, she was originally planned to be named Serena.
She was built by Fincantieri yachts. To design of Espen Oeino. She was delivered to her owner Yuri Shefler in 2011.
The Serene boat is powered by 8 MTU diesel marine engines. Which bring her a max speed of 18 knots and a cruising speed of 14 knots. Her range is more than 5,000nm.
Her interior is designed by Raymond Langton Design. Her features include an internal seawater pool. Which can also be used for a float-in docking of a tender. And she has two helideck platforms and one heli-hangar.
Further, she has a snow room, a spa with a sauna, and a climbing wall. And she has a multiple deck water slide. The motor yacht can accommodate 24 guests. Serene has 12 guest cabins and 30 crew cabins. She has a crew of 54.
A Submarine and a Helicopter Tender
Motor yacht Serene carries a GSE Trieste VAS 525/60 submarine. And a Eurocopter EC-145 with registration M-SRNE.
The VAS 525 submarine is an all-electric submarine. And can carry max 5 persons, to a max depth of 160 meters for up to 8 hours.
We estimate her price at around US$ 2.5 million. The list price of an EC-145 Eurocopter starts at US$ 5.5 million.
Bill Gates Holiday
In the summer of 2014 Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates was spotted on the yacht. With his family enjoying a Mediterranean holiday. In January 2015, Serene visited New Zealand.
Sold to the Royal Family of Saudi Arabia
In August 2015 SuperYachtFan was informed that Mr. Yuri Shefler had sold Serene. For an amount of EUR 350 million to an Arab billionaire.
And – not really to our surprise – Serene arrived in Jeddah in early September 2015. Later we were told that King Salman of Saudi Arabia or one of his sons is the new owner of Serene.
Dutch Court Documents
According to Dutch court documents Shefler sold Serene for EUR 450 million, so more than $ 500 million. According to these same court documents, he had paid EUR 220 million. So he realized a profit on the sale of EUR 230 million. (More than $ 250 million).
Prince Mohammad bin Salman
We also found some info claiming that Salman’s son Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman owns the Serene yacht now. We were told that Prince Mohammad also owns the yacht Pegasus VIII .
And to our surprise, in October 2016 both Serene and Pegasus were in Vlissingen The Netherlands at a refit yard.
In August 2017 Serene ran aground in the Red Sea near Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt. The yacht was reportedly bow-up on the rocks. She sustained structural damage to the bulb, bow, and hull.
The cause was thought to be a navigational track error and propulsion failure.
According to Bloomberg Leonardo Da Vinci’s masterpiece, Salvator Mundi is kept on the yacht. MBS bought Salvator Mundi at an auction for US$ 400 million.
The yacht’s former owner is Yuri Shefler. He sold the yacht to Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
