Standing tall at 115 meters (377 ft), Luna boasts diesel-electric generators that push her top speed to an impressive 22 knots. Her cruising speed sits comfortably at 18 knots. Thanks to a mammoth 1 million liter fuel tank, Luna can navigate an impressive range of 9,500 nm, making her one of the largest explorer yachts in the world.
The current owner of Luna is Azerbaijani billionaire Farkhad Akhmedov. Akhmedov hails from Azerbaijan, a nation that gained independence from the Soviet Union in the 1990s. His relationship with the Russian Government has seen its fair share of ups and downs, and he was compelled to sell his gas company at a less-than-fair value, ultimately leaving Russia.
In a twist of events during the summer of 2018, a Dubai court endorsed an earlier London court order. The verdict? Ownership of the Luna yacht was to be transferred to Akhmedov’s ex-wife Tatiana as part of a disputed divorce settlement.
Fast forward to March 2019, a Dubai appeals court released Luna from seizure, ruling the UK court order as unenforceable in Dubai. This decision saw the seizure of the superyacht cancelled.
In July 2021, Akhmedov agreed to pay approximately 135 million pounds ($186 million) to his ex-wife, marking the end of the largest financial dispute in Britain’s divorce court history.
Known for her luxury and status, Luna is valued at a whopping $300 million. This high-end expedition yacht comes with an annual running cost of around $30 million. The price of a yacht can differ greatly depending on various factors, including the size, age, luxury level of the yacht, and the materials and technology utilized in its construction.
In 2014, Luna was sold by Russian billionaire Abramovich to his friend, billionaire Farkhad Akhmedov, born in Azerbaijan. The sale saw a hefty price tag of EUR 240 million (US$ 300 million).
A major milestone in Luna’s journey was her arrival at German Dry Docks in January 2015. This marked the beginning of a year-long, multi-million dollar refit.
The extensive refit saw several transformations. Fairing of the hull was completed – a task not undertaken when Abramovich initially purchased her. Luna also underwent a full repaint, and was extended by 2 meters to enhance her balance.
The spa area and beach club received a makeover, with larger windows added to invite more natural light and create a sense of spaciousness. The engines were overhauled to enhance power and efficiency, and all the tenders were replaced.
In February 2016, Luna left Bremerhaven and headed towards Norway. The winter of 2017/2018 saw Luna heading to Dubai for additional works. In July 2019, she underwent her 10-year survey maintenance.
