UPDATE APRIL 2025
We received the following message from Mr. Usmanov’s Press Service:
Neither Alisher Usmanov nor Gulbakhor Ismailova are the owners or controlling persons of the yacht Dilbar (and the associated with it Airbus H175 helicopter – , Airbus A340 ‘Bourkhan’ , property in the UK, including Beechwood House in Highgate North London and Sutton Place in Guildford. The yacht “Alaia” (or “Lady Gulya”) was never owned by Mr Usmanov. Those assets are owned and controlled (or was owned and controlled in case of “Alaia”) by the independent trustee of an irrevocable discretionary trust settled many years ago by Mr. Usmanov for estate planning purposes.
Mr. Usmanov has not been a beneficiary of the trust for a long time. Even when he was a beneficiary, he had no rights in respect of the assets in the trust. Moreover, Gulbakhor Ismailova has never been the owner or the controlling person of the Dilbar yacht. In February 2024, the German Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) deleted its posts from social media where it had mistakenly named Ms. Ismailova as the legal owner of the Dilbar yacht.
Furthermore, on 14 March 2025, the EU Council removed Ms. Ismailova from the sanctions list. The EU decision to lift sanctions off Ms. Ismailova demonstrates that there are no grounds to justify sanctions against her and that the previous reasoning used for these purposes was vitiated with errors.
Please also note that the Dilbar yacht was not “seized” by German authorities. It was raided by German authorities in searches, some of which were later declared unlawful.
· As is publicly known, Mr. Usmanov owns less than 50% of USM Holdings. Furthermore, he has long since stepped away from running the business and does not make any management decisions in the company.
· Mr. Usmanov is an indirect shareholder of Metalloinvest and MegaFon, holding the stakes through USM Holdings, in which he owns less than 50%.
· Mr Usmanov sold his shares in UTH in 2018.
· Mr. Usmanov was an indirect shareholder of Mail.ru Group (further renamed VK), holding the stake through USM Holdings. Furthermore, in December 2021, USM Holdings sold its stakes in VK, thereby fully exiting its shareholding in VK.
· Mr Usmanov doesn’t own or control Dassault Falcon 7X with registration LX-USM.
· Mr. Usmanov and Irina Viner are no longer married, they divorced in 2022.
· Mr. Usmanov does not own ‘Klaret Group’ or Klaret Holdings Limited.
· Mr. Usmanov no longer invests in Digital Sky Technologies. Neither Mr. Usmanov nor any companies in which Mr. Usmanov has a direct or indirect interest currently hold stakes in such companies as Facebook, Twitter, Groupon, Zynga, Spotify, Zocdoc, Airbnb, Alibaba, and 360buy. Investments in some of these companies have been made in the past, but all shares have since been sold.
And last but not least, it is incorrect to refer to Mr. Usmanov as an “oligarch”. By definition, this term refers to individuals who gained wealth through connections with the Russian state in the 1990s, and profited from privatization and the so-called “loans-for-shares” auctions.
This does not apply to Mr. Usmanov, who built his fortune independently through successful entrepreneurial activity. The EU Council has stopped using this label in relation to Mr. Usmanov and replaced it with “businessperson” in his updated sanctions reasoning. In that regard, we ask that you likewise refrain from using this term in reference to his name.
Please note that since 2022, more than 150 media outlets have had to correct their materials in which such inaccuracies were made, following both out-of-court and litigation proceedings. These include GQ, Forbes, NDR, WDR, Stern,Deutsche Welle, ZDF, RTL, Blick, Tagesspiegel and others.
We kindly request that you remove or correct the publications outlined above in English and all other languages for the benefit of your readers and for the sake of balanced reporting. Should you have any questions, we would be happy to assist.
Thank you in advance for your attention to this matter.
Respectfully yours,
Press Service of Alisher Usmanov
