After the death of his father in November 2004, MBZ’s half-brother, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed, succeeded him as the president of the UAE and the ruler of Abu Dhabi. However, when Sheikh Khalifa suffered a stroke in January 2014, MBZ took on an increasingly important role in UAE policymaking and became the de facto ruler of Abu Dhabi.
As the crown prince of Abu Dhabi, MBZ was entrusted with most of the day-to-day decision-making of the emirate.
