We were told Koum is the owner of the yacht Mogambo and her support vessel Power Play.

Who is Jan KoumJan Koum?

He is a US based billionaire, co-founder of the Whatsapp messaging service. He was born in the Ukraine in February 1976. He arrived in the USA at the age of 16.

He co-founded Whatsapp in 2009 together with Brian Acton. We were told he is the owner of the yacht Mogambo and her support vessel Power Play.

WhatsApp Messenger is a freeware, cross-platform messaging service. Since 2014 it is owned by Facebook. Whatsapp allows users to send text and voice messages and share images and documents. It has more than 1.5 billion users (and just 50 employees).

Sold to Facebook

In 2014 paid US$ 19.3 billion, a value which was created in just 5 years. Whatsapp had ‘just’ 400 million users. It was the largest acquisition of a venture-backed company in history.

Facebook paid $4 billion in cash, $12 billion in Facebook shares, and $3 billion in restricted stock units. These restricted stock units were granted to WhatsApp's founders Koum and Acton. Koum remained WhatsApp's CEO and became a member of Facebook's board of directors. He left in 2018.

Koum Net Worth

At the sale of WhatsApp he received around US$ 2 billion in cash and 76 million Facebook shares. Those shares alone are worth US$ 14 billion (September 2019). But he gave some away. Forbes estimates Koum net worth at US$ 10 billion.

He has donated more than US$ 500 million to charity.

Koum Residence

He owns several houses in the USA. But his main residence is said to be Atherthon in California. He bought several adjoining plots to create a very large residence. On one of the plots he built a museum like building to house his collection of rare Porsche cars. (See the photos down at this page).

He also bought a US$ 100 million mansion in Paradise Cove in Malibu.

Private Jet

We think he does not own a private jet. It seems he charters aircraft, with services as NetJets. Do you know more about a private jet owned by Koum? Please do send us a message.

Porsche Car Collection

Koum owns a large collection of Porsche cars.  The collection has more than 100 cars.  He owes a lot to Porsche, with his desire to own one of the German sports cars, lighting a fire under his ambition in the early years of his career. “For me, a Porsche always represented the epitome of success,” he said. “And the desire to have a car like that, was a key incentive to learn more and to work even harder.”

Early 2019 when he ran out of garage space, he auctioned 10 of his cars. A rare 2015 Porsche 918 Spyder Weissach was sold for US$ 1.5 million. A yellow 1993 Porsche 964 Carrera RS 3.8 was sold for US$ 1.1 million.

M/Y Mogambo

Mogambo was built at Nobiskrug to a design of Reymond Langton. She was one of 5 yachts ordered by Kristal Waters, a yacht management company owned by the Reuben brothers.

The Reuben brothers have constructed Triple Seven, Siren, Sapphire, Mogambo and Graffiti. The brothers sold 4 yachts and kept Siren as their private yacht.

MY Mogambo can accommodate 12 guests in 6 staterooms. She has a crew of 19. She is powered by 2 MTU engines. Which bring her a max speed of 17 knots. Her cruise speed is 14 knots. The yacht has a range of more than 4,000nm.

We believe she was bought by Koum in 2018. In 2019 he also bought the yacht Power Play, which will act as a support vessel for Mogambo

MY Power Play Yacht

Power Play is a 55 meter YS5009 support vessel, built at Damen in the Netherlands. (Damen is the parent company of Amels Yachts).

Her features include an enclosed helicopter hangar (installed after she was purchased) and a dive center. She facilities for operating in zero-discharge zones such as marine nature reserve.

She can accommodate 6 guests in 3 staterooms and has a crew of 7. Power Play is powered by 4 Caterpillar engines. Which bring her a top speed of 22 knots. She has a range of more than 5,000nm. The 55 meter has a value of around US$ 20 million.
