The company was founded by their father Ambrogio Perfetti in 1946. The company introduced chewing gum to Italy. In 2001 Perfetti acquired van Melle, the Dutch producer of Mentos and Fruittella.
In 2006 the company, now called Perfetti van Melle, acquired the Spanish candy producer Chupa Chups.
Perfetti van Melle is the third largest producer of sugar confectionery and gum in the world. The group operation 35 companies and has 19,000 employees. In 2011 Perfetti van Melle realized sales of EUR 2,4 billion, in more than 150 countries.
Augusto Perfetti’s yacht Air was named after their successful Italian brand name Air Action chewing gum. Air has a matt black hull. Her interior is designed by Remie Tessier. She was built by Feadship to a design of De Voogt. Air was delivered in 2011.
Air can accommodate 14 guests and has a crew of 21. Early 2016 the yacht Air arrived at Feadship XL in Makkum, The Netherlands for a refit. Air is available for charter.
In 2005 Augusto Perfetti had ordered a 90 meter Lurssen yacht also named Air, but during construction he received an offer from Suleiman Kerimov he could not refuse.
Augusto’s brother Giorgo owns a large sailing yacht built in Holland and a rare Ferrari 250 GTO (I3869GT). Giorgio Perfetti lives in a large house in Palm Beach, Florida
In 2018 Forbes estimated the combined net worth of the Perfetti brothers at USD 6.5 billion.
