Leonid Mikhelson is Chairman and major shareholder of Novatek, Russia’s largest natural gas producer. He was born in August 1955. He is married to Lyudmilla. They have 2 children (daughter Viktoria and a young son).
Novatek
The basis of Novatek started with the privatization of Kuybyshevtruboprovodstroy, one of the largest state-owned enterprises specializing in oil and gas pipeline construction in Russia. Mikhelson was managing director and became a shareholder at the privatization.
Novatek began to expand and diversify its operations by acquiring interests in oil and gas companies that held exploration and production licenses in Yamal-Nenets.
In 2017 Novatek realized sales of approx $10 billion and an operating income of $4.6 billion. The gas company Novatek has 6,000 employees.
Mikhelson’s business partner Gennady Timchenko is also a shareholder at the gas company. Timchenko is the owner of the yacht LENA.
Sibur
Mikhelson also owns more than 50% of the shares in Sibur. Sibur is a gas processing and petrochemical company. Sibur has 26 production sites and more than 26,000 employees.
Mikhelson and Gennady Timchenko together own 82.5% of the shares of Sibur.
Mikhelson Art Collection
The Russian billionaire is known as an art collector. He is the founder and president of the VAC Foundation (Viktoria – the Art of Being Contemporary). It is dedicated to the international presentation, production, and development of Russian contemporary art.
The collection is named after his daughter Viktoria Mikhelson.
