Richard Liu was born and raised in a modest rural village in Jiangsu Province, China. In 1992, he achieved the highest score in his province’s Gaokao (national university entrance exam) and went on to study sociology at Renmin University in Beijing. His community famously gathered “76 eggs and 500 yuan” to help support him in the move to the city.
In 1998, Liu opened a physical electronics store under the name Jingdong. During the SARS outbreak in 2003, he pivoted entirely to online sales, launching JD.com in 2004. By 2005, he closed all physical locations to focus exclusively on e-commerce. His business quickly became known for its reliability, genuine products, and fast delivery—qualities that distinguished JD.com from many competitors.
Under Liu’s leadership, JD.com grew into one of China’s largest online retailers, with major investments from Tencent, Walmart, and Google.
As of 2025, Liu’s net worth is estimated at US $6 billion. He has regularly given back to his hometown, including a notable instance in which he donated around US $1,400 to every resident over 60 years old, along with winter coats and food supplies.
Lürssen’s Deep Blue is a 134-meter (≈440-foot) superyacht with five decks and a gross tonnage of roughly 9,000 GT. Launched in 2025 from the shipyard in Bremen, Germany, it is among the largest yachts in the world by volume. While the ownership has not been publicly confirmed, industry sources widely link the vessel to Richard Liu.
Liu also bought the Lurssen yacht Golden Odyssey, which he used as an intermediate yacht. Golden Odyssey is now listed for sale.
Liu’s insistence on controlling logistics and ensuring product authenticity built JD.com’s strong reputation in a market often plagued by counterfeit goods. Over time, he expanded the company’s reach into fintech, cloud services, and smart-city technology.
In 2022, Liu stepped down as CEO but retained his role as chairman. His career and management style have often been compared to Jeff Bezos, given his self-made success and influence in shaping China’s e-commerce landscape.
