Who is Rupert Murdoch?
Rupert Murdoch is the owner of News Corporation, the world’s second-largest media conglomerate. He was born in 1931, in Melbourne. His father Keith Murdoch was a war correspondent. And later owned two regional newspapers in Adelaide, South Australia. He also owned a small radio station.
He is married to Jerry Hall and has 6 children. (Lachlan, James, Prudence, Elisabeth, Grace and Chloe Murdoch).
News Limited
He inherited Australia’s News Limited from his father in 1952.
At that time News Limited owned the Adelaide News. Which had a circulation of over 90,000 copies. As well as the Sunday Mail, with over 150,000 sales.
From there the newspaper and magazine holdings were expanded throughout Australia. First into Melbourne and Perth. Then in 1960 to Sydney where one of News Limited’s titles, the Daily Mirror, eventually became the biggest selling paper in New South Wales. Murdoch also entered the New Zealand market.
The Australian
In 1964 he launched The Australian, Australia’s first national daily newspaper. In the following decades, Murdoch acquired various newspapers in Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom.
The group expanded into the UK market in December 1968. With the purchase of the News of the World and later The Sun, The Times, and The Sunday Times. All under the holding company which is today called NI Group Limited. Or more commonly referred to as News International.
Expansion into the US market and beyond took place from 1973 onwards. And later with diversification into other media as well as newspapers.
News Corporation
In 1979 The News Corporation Limited was incorporated in Australia. As the holding company for these global Investments.
News Corporation was reincorporated in the US in 2004. Where it is today listed on the NASDAQ. And with a secondary listing on the Australian Securities Exchange. And a standard listing on the London Stock Exchange.
In the United States Murdoch acquired Twentieth Century Fox, HarperCollins and The Wall Street Journal. He also owns the New York Post and several television stations.
21st Century Fox
In 2013 News Corporation was split in two publicly traded companies. The present News Corp. was renamed 21st Century Fox. The company is oriented towards media. And a new News Corp was formed and is oriented towards publishing.
His son James Murdoch is CEO of 21st Century Fox. James resides with his wife Kathryn in New York. The net worth of James Murdoch is estimated at US$ 2 billion.
Murdoch Sailing Yachts
The media mogul owned two luxury yachts: The Perini Navi sailing yacht Rosehearty. Which was named after Murdoch’s Long Island, NY estate. And Philippe Briand designed the sailing yacht Vertigo.
Murdoch sold Rosehearty in 2014 to US real estate developer Joey Kaempfer.
