Leonardo Del Vecchio was the founder and executive chairman of Luxottica. And he was the richest man in Italy. He was born in May 1935 in Milan in a poor family. He died June 27, 2022 aged 87.  He was married to Nicoletta Zampillo. He has 6 children (Claudio, Leonardo Maria, Clemente, Luca, Marisa, and Paola).

He started as a toolmaker and focused on eyeglass parts. In the 1960’s he started selling complete eyeglass frames. He named his company Luxottica. Within a few years, he started manufacturing with brand licensing deals. He was the owner of the yacht Moneikos.


The Luxottica Group is the largest eyewear company in the world. The company designs, manufactures, and sells eyewear. It owns brands such as Ray-Ban, Oakley, Sunglass Hut, and Pearle Vision.

The company also makes and designs frames. For brands as Prada, Dolce, and Gabbana, Armani, and Chanel. The Luxottica group realizes annual sales of more than US$ 10 billion. The company has more than 80,000 employees.

The group is active in more than 150 countries. And sells its products in more than 9,000 stores. Giorgo Armani is also a shareholder.
