He is the founder of the Institute for International Research (IIR), the world’s largest conference organizer. IIR is known in the yacht industry as the organizer of the annual Monaco Yacht Show. IIR was active in 35 countries,  organizing  4,000 conferences every year.

In 2005 Laidlaw sold IIR to Informa Group for (roughly) $1 billion. Since then he invested in a large real estate portfolio. He is also an investor in a wind-farm project and other clean energy sources.
