John Orin Edson was the founder of Bayliner. He was born on May 8, 1932, he died on August 27, 2019. He was married to Charlene Edson.
He had two sons from a previous marriage: John Michael Edson and Mark Alexander Edson.
Orin was a pioneer in the recreational boating industry. He started selling 2nd hand boats. In 1960 Orin purchased the brand name Bayliner for $100.
Bayliner Marine Corp. became the largest and most successful boat-manufacturing company in the world.
He built high-quality boats at an affordable price.
In the 1980s Bayliner grew to annual sales of above $450 million.
In 1986 the company was sold to Brunswick for $425 million.
He later bought Westport Yachts
Westport Yachts is a custom yacht builder founded in 1964. Westport is considered to be the Number 1 Yacht Builder In North America.
The company is specialized in building Composite Motoryachts. It has built more than 160 yachts.
Westport maintains a large in-house design and development staff of naval architects, marine engineers and design specialists.
Westport Yachts applies the most advanced composite technologies and materials – like infusion, resin impregnation and advanced coring materials – to create vessels that are both light in weight and superior in strength.
Westport built J. Orin Edson’s yacht Evviva in 2014.
At the time of his death, his net worth was $ 1.4 billion. He was an active philanthropist through his J. Orin Edson Foundation. He also founded the Northwest Organization for Animal Help.

He lived with his wife Charlene Edson in a relatively modest house in Jackson Town, Wyoming.
He was the owner of a Learjet 35, with registration N888BL. The BL referred to Bayliner. The aircraft was built in 1978, and was already sold a year later. It still flies though, now with registration N76RA.
Later he owned a few Cessna jets: the N444BL, and the N999BL.
