Bernie Ecclestone is the Chairman Emeritus of the Formula One Group. The Formula One Group is responsible for the promotion of the FIA Formula One World Championship, and exploitation of the sport's commercial rights. For 40 years Bernie Ecclestone was CEO of the F1 Group and for long he was owner of a large part of the companies shares.
Ecclestone took over the ownership of the commercial rights of Formula One from the teams in the 1990s. In 2000 he leased the commercial rights for 110 years for US $360 million. SLEC Holdings was created as the holding company of the Formula One companies in 1996 when Bernie Ecclestone transferred his ownership of Formula One businesses to his wife, Slavica Ecclestone, in preparation for a 1997 flotation of the group.
