The yacht Indian Empress was built as Al Mirqab. For the prime minister of Qatar. In 2018 the yacht was sold in an auction. The auction price was just EUR 35 million. She is now named NEOM.

Mallya is the chairman of the United Breweries Group. One of India's largest conglomerates. It has wide interests including brewing, aviation, pharmaceuticals and real estate. And also in engineering, fertilizers, biotechnology and information technology.

He was born in December 1955. He is married to Rekha Mallya. He has 4 children (Siddhart, Laila, Tanya, Leanna).

He built a reputation as India's “King of Good Times”. Mallya was the owner of the luxury yacht Indian Empress.

Kingfisher Beer

United Breweries is India's largest producer of beer. With a market share of around 48%. It’s famous brand name is Kingfisher Beer. The companies realized sales of more than US$ 5 billion in 2013.

Mallya became chairman of the company at the age of 26. That was when his father died.

Mallya now owns approx. 5.3 million shares in United Brewery. He owns 8% of the total share capital. This is representing a value of around US$ 70 million.

Kingfisher Airlines

Mallya launched Kingfisher Airline. It was an airline established in 2005. The company later became insolvent and was shut down in 2012.

Vijay Mallya Net Worth

Forbes estimates the net worth of Mallya at USD 750 million. Mallya was the co-owner of the Formula One team Sahara Force India. He sold the team to Lawrence Stroll.

Private Jet

Vijay Vittal Mallya owns an Airbus A319 private jet. The jet has registration VT-VJM. The jet used to be registered to Kingfisher Airlines. But ownership was changed to the United Breweries Group a few years ago.

An Airbus A-319 has a list price of US$ 88 million. Mallya used the jet to follow his F1 team around the world.

Mallya owns many houses around the world. Including a large mansion in California. And a house in London and a villa in the South of France.

Force India Yacht

Mallya also owns the Mangusta 165 yacht Force India. Force India was built at Overmarine in 2007. She is powered by two MTU engines. Which bring her a top speed of 37 knots.

Force India can accommodate 10 guests and has a crew of 9. Her interior is designed by Stefano Righini .


In 2018 Mallya appeared to London's Westminster Magistrates' Court. The court found a case against Mallya for fraud, conspiracy and money laundering. The verdict was that Mallya should be extradited to India .

He could appeal the decision to London's High Court. He claimed the verdict was politically motivated on request of Indian Authorities. And he offered to pay back the loans he owed.

Yacht NEOM (Indian Empress)

NEOM was delivered in 2000.  She was built as Al Mirqab for the prime minister of Qatar. For many years she was owned by Mallya. Who named her Indian Empress.

The Largest Yacht built by Oceanco

She was the largest yacht (95m or 311ft) to be built by Oceanco. That was until the delivery of Jubilee.

Mallya acquired the yacht in 2006 and renamed her Indian Empress. She can reach a speed of 26 knots. She is powered by three MTU diesels of 10,000hp each.

Yacht Interior

She has a total of 16 staterooms for her owners and his guests. The yacht is rumored to hold two Mercedes cars on board. And several original painting from Renoir and Chagall.

She boasts an entire deck dedicated to the master suite that includes a gym, sauna and steam room.

Sold in an Auction

In 2018 Indian Empress was sold in an auction ordered by a Maltese Court. Mallya allegedly abandoned the superyacht in the summer of 2017. The owner is said to owe 40 crew members and several suppliers more than $1 million. The superyacht was impounded in Malta in March this year. That was on behalf of her creditors.


She was sold for EUR 35 million and was named NEOM. She is now probably Saudi owned. As NEOM is a real estate project in Saudia Arabia. It is linked to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Neom can roughly be translated as ‘New Future’. More here.

Sahara Force India

She was often seen at Formula One events. As Mallya was the owner of the F1 team Sahara Force India.  The F1 team was sold to Lawrence Stroll in 2018. There were rumors that Mallya sold the yacht in 2011 but that he still useed her.


Mallya also owns the classic yacht Kalizma. Built in 1906, Kalizma was bought in 1967 by cinema actor Richard Burton. It was a gift for his wife Elizabeth Taylor.

The yacht was named was named 'Kalizma' after Burton's children Kate, Liza and Maria. In 1995 Kalizma was reportedly bought by Mallya. He restored her and still uses her.
