The yacht Indian Empress was built as Al Mirqab for the prime minister of Qatar. In 2018 the yacht was sold in an auction for (just) EUR 35 million. She is now named NEOM.

The yacht NEOM was delivered in 2000 as Al Mirqab for the prime minister of Qatar. For many years she was owned by Vijay Mallya who named her Indian Empress.

The Largest Yacht built by Oceanco

She was the largest yacht (95m or 311ft) to be built by Oceanco until the delivery of Jubilee.

Vijay Mallya acquired the yacht in 2006 and renamed her Indian Empress. She can reach a speed of 26 knots, powered by her three MTU diesels of 10,000hp each.

She has a total of 16 staterooms for her owners and his guests. The yacht is rumored to hold two Mercedes cars on board and several original painting from Renoir and Chagall.

She boasts an entire deck dedicated to the master suite that includes a gym, sauna and steam room.

Sold in an Auction

In 2018 Indian Empress was sold in an auction ordered by a Maltese Court. Mallya allegedly abandoned the superyacht in the summer of 2017. The owner is said to owe 40 crew members and several suppliers more than $1 million. The superyacht was impounded in Malta in March this year on behalf of her creditors.


She was sold for EUR 35 million and was named NEOM. She is now probably Saudi owned, as NEOM is a real estate project in Saudia Arabia, linked to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Neom can roughly be translated as ‘New Future’. More here.

Sahara Force India

She is often seen at Formula One events, as Mallya is the owner of the F1 team Sahara Force India. There are rumors that Mallya sold the yacht in 2011 but that he still uses her.


Mallya also owns the classic yacht Kalizma. Built in 1906, Kalizma was bought in 1967 by cinema actor Richard Burton as gift for his wife Elizabeth Taylor.

The yacht was named was named 'Kalizma' after Burton's children Kate, Liza and Maria. In 1995 Kalizma was bought by Vijay Mallya, he restored her and still uses her.
