The Savarona yacht is a remarkable vessel with a fascinating history. Built by Blohm Voss in 1931 for Emily Roebling Cadwalader, the granddaughter of the engineer of the famous Brooklyn Bridge, the yacht’s cost at that time was around $4 million, which is equivalent to more than $80 million in current value. The Savarona was the largest superyacht in the world at the time of its launch.
In 1938, the Turkish government bought the yacht and gifted it to Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founding father of the Republic of Turkey. Unfortunately, he died just a few months later.
In 1979, the yacht was severely damaged in a fire. However, in 1989, it was restored to its former glory by Kahraman Sadikoglu, owner of the Turkish Sadikoglu Group. It is alleged that Sadikoglu spent $50 million on refurbishing the yacht, which included replacing its original steam turbine engines with Caterpillar engines. The yacht was rebuilt at Tuzla Shipyards to keep the memory of Atatürk alive.
The Savarona is powered by Caterpillar engines and has a maximum speed of 18 knots with a cruising speed of 16 knots. The yacht has a range of more than 3000 nm and is designed by Cox & Stevens. It can accommodate up to 34 guests and a crew of 44, providing an unforgettable luxury experience for all on board.
The current owner of the Savarona yacht is the Government of Turkey. In 1989, Sadikoglu chartered the yacht and allegedly leased it to private clients. However, in 2010, Turkish media reported the presence of underage prostitutes on board the yacht. Sadikoglu denied the allegations, but the lease contract was canceled, and the Turkish government reclaimed the superyacht.
