Fire Incident at Lürssen-Kröger Shipyard
A fire broke out at the Lürssen-Kröger shipyard in Schacht-Audorf near Rendsburg early on July 2 2024, engulfing an entire hall and a nearly completed yacht identified as Project “Honolulu.” The incident occurred at approximately 9 a.m., triggering a swift response from emergency services.
Response and Evacuation
Emergency responders swiftly evacuated a nearby residential area due to the intensity of the blaze. By 11:05 a.m., parts of the hall’s structure had collapsed, exacerbating the challenges faced by firefighters battling the inferno. Despite extensive efforts, plumes of black smoke billowed for kilometers, visible from afar.
Impact on Production and Operations
The fire at Lürssen-Kröger shipyard has caused significant disruption, potentially leading to production delays. Damaged equipment and the loss of personal items belonging to evacuated workers further compound the challenges faced by the shipyard management. The incident necessitated the deployment of two rescue helicopters and ten emergency vehicles to manage the crisis effectively.
Project “Honolulu” and Industry Significance
Project “Honolulu,” a 2,250-ton luxury yacht nearing completion at Lürssen-Kröger, was one of the casualties of the fire. Scheduled for delivery in 2024, the yacht represented a pinnacle of craftsmanship and innovation within the yacht industry.
The 75 meter (246ft) superyacht was under construction for a billionaire owner based in Saudi Arabia
This setback echoes a similar incident in 2018 when Lürssen’s “Sassi” project was also destroyed in a fire, underscoring the vulnerability of high-value assets during the construction phase.
Community Impact and Safety Measures
Authorities advised local residents to keep windows and doors closed to minimize exposure to smoke and airborne particles. Fortunately, the fire had no immediate impact on the nearby North Sea-Baltic Sea Canal shipping operations, ensuring continuity in maritime traffic.
