SuperYacht Pelorus (from the Greek word pelorios, meaning vast) is one of the world’s biggest yachts. She has a length of 377 feet 3 inches (115 meters). The yacht has a steel hull and aluminum superstructure. The yacht accommodates 18 guests and has a crew of 41.
The yacht Pelorus was built at the Lürssen yard in Bremen, Germany to the design of Tim Heywood and was launched in 2003. It was briefly owned by a Saudi businessman who sold it to Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich the following year.
Abramovich had it refitted to his own requirements by Blohm & Voss. This included the addition of a second helicopter pad forward, four new zero-speed stabilizers and modifications to the exhaust, mast and stern.
Abramovich also owned Ecstasea and gave away Le Grand Bleu to friend Eugene Shvidler. He now owns Eclipse and Solaris, one of the largest yachts in the world.
Sold for US$ 200 Million
In 2011 he sold Pelorus to David Geffen, for EUR 150 million or US$ 200 million.
Pelorus is powered by two 5,500-hp Wärtsilä 12v 26 engines. Which will give her a maximum speed of 19 knots. She often cruises between 12 to 14 knots. Her range is more than 6,000nm.
The yacht has a number of tenders onboard and a garage full of ‘toys’, including jet skis and wave runners.
Yacht Pelorus Crew
A full-time crew of up to 46 people lives aboard all year long. Pelorus can often be found cruising around the Western Mediterranean during the summers. And commonly cruises down through the Suez Canal for the winters.
Sold to Abdullah al Nahyan
Mr. Geffen sold Pelorus to Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan for EUR 214 million. The yacht was then based in Abu Dhabi. Geffen still owns his yacht Rising Sun, which was built for Larry Ellison.
Update: we were informed that Pelorus is sold to Hong Kong-based billionaire Tak Lee, active in real estate development.
In November 2017 Pelorus was at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, berthed next to the track. Update: and at the 2018 Grand Prix she was there again.
The yacht’s owner is billionaire Samuel Tak Lee. He listed her for sale in September 2022.
