Rattan Chadha is the Dutch founder and former CEO of the Mexx clothing company and founder of the CitizenM hotel chain. Rattan Chadha was born in India, into a rich family of steel manufacturers. In 1971 Chadha moved to the Netherlands, where he started importing clothes from India and the Far East. He launched two lines of clothing in 1980, Moustache for men, and Emanuelle for women. In 1986 he merged his companies into Mexx.
In a decade Mexx expanded to become an international brand with over 800 stores in more than 50 countries. In 2001, Mexx was acquired by Liz Claiborne (now named Kate Spade & Company) for about US$ 500 million.
In 2008 started the innovative hotel concept called CitizenM. CitizenM is a new brand of lifestyle hotels aiming to provide a new type of hotel experience for a new type of traveler. The founding philosophy of citizenM is offering ‘Affordable Luxury for the People’. The hotels are characterized by contemporary design, innovative technology and affordable rates. CitizenM has now six hotels: in Amsterdam, in Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, in Glasgow, New York, Paris, London and Rotterdam.
