However, in December 2019, the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) declared the appointment of Chandrasekaran as executive chairman illegal and restored Mistry. However, the Supreme Court stayed NCLAT’s order on 10 January 2020. Mistry has filed a cross-appeal in the court, seeking explanations for anomalies in the NCLAT.

He died in a car crash near Mumbai on September 4, 2022. The Mercedes GLC car hit a barrier, Mistry was in the back seat, reportedly without seat belts. One other person (Jahangir Dhinshaw Padole) was killed and two more passengers were injured, police in India’s western Maharastra state said. At the time of the accident, Dr Anahita Pandole was driving the Mercedes car. Her husband Darius Pandole was on the front passenger seat, while Mistry and Jehangir died on the spot during the accident. Dr Anahita and Darius are heavily injured and both are recovering in the hospital.
