Who was Paul Allen?

Paul Allen was one of the richest yacht owners in the world. He founded Microsoft together with Bill Gates in 1975. He was born in 1953 and died in October 2018.

He is responsible for bringing the personal computer to the masses. He delivered the disk operating system (DOS) for the original IBM PCs.

He had his own private asset management company named Vulcan Inc. His investments included real estate, technology, media, and content companies.

Just like Bill Gates, he attended the Lakeside School in Seattle.

He owned Three Sports Teams

Allen also owned three sports teams. The Seattle Seahawks (NFL), the Portland Trail Blazers (NBA). And the Seattle Sounders FC franchise (MLS).

The foundation focuses on the US Pacific North West region. And has donated close to US$ 500 million.  In total Paul has donated more than US$ 2 billion to good causes.

In 1998 Allen founded the Flying Heritage Collection. It is a collection of rare WorldWar II aircraft. The collection opened to the public in 2004.  He has donated USD 100 million for the prevention of the Ebola Crisis. And he is the founder of The Allen Institute for Brain Science.

Private Island

In December 2013 Paul sold his Washington-based private island. It was named Allen Island, after a Navy hero.

Research Vessel (R/V) Petrel

Allen also owned the Research Vessel Petrel. The 76 meters (250 ft) Petrel was acquired in early 2017. It was retrofitted with state-of-the-art subsea equipment. Capable of diving to 6,000 meters (or three and a half miles).

The vessel used to be known as AcergyPetrel. And was active as a pipeline inspection vessel. The vessel was built in 2003. And is equipped to support all aspects of pipeline inspection, seabed survey. And also ROV operations can accommodate up to 50 people on board.

USS Indianapolis Wreckage

In August 2017 the RV Petrel discovered the wreckage of the USS Indianapolis. It lay 5,500 meters below the surface. Resting on the floor of the North Pacific Ocean.

The Indianapolis was lost in the final days of World War II. When it was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine. Prior to the attack, the Indianapolis had just completed its secret mission.

USS Lexington Wreckage

Early March 2018 Allen’s research vessel Petrel found the wreckage of the World War II-era aircraft carrier USS Lexington. 76 years after it was sunk in the Coral Sea.

The Lexington is one of the first aircraft carriers built by the U.S. It went down in 1942 with 216 crew members and 35 aircraft on board. More here.
