Heidi Horten was the richest woman in Austria as she inherited a $1 billion fortune from her husband Helmut Horten. She was born in February 1941 in Vienna. She passed away on June 12, 2022, aged 81. She married Helmut in 1966 at the age of 25, while he was 57. In 1987 she inherited a $1 billion fortune from him. She was the owner of the yacht Carinthia VII.

Helmut Horten

Helmut Horten (1909 – 1987) was a German entrepreneur who built up the fourth-largest chain of department stores in Germany. Horten introduced Germany’s first supermarket after a visit to the United States. With the copied business model his group expanded rapidly.

In 1968 he floated his group on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange. At that moment Horten’s group had 25,000 employees and annual sales of USD 1 billion.

Sold his Company in 1972

In 1972 Horten sold his majority stake and retired from the business, which lost a great deal of value soon afterward. In 1994 the chain was bought by Kauhof Holding AG, and merged into the German retail group METRO AG in 1996.

Heidi Horten was Director of the Helmut Horten Foundation,  which aims at supporting the healthcare system through financial contributions to medical research facilities, hospitals, and other healthcare institutions, as well as to individuals who are in need of medical care.

She had an amazing art collection. Known as the HH Collection. The collection includes the work of Francis Bacon and Andy Warhol. It is considered as one of the most important surveys on the innovative and progressive practices of the 20th-century Western art.

The Horten family has owned several luxury yachts, all named Carinthia.

Carinthia VII, named after Austria’s Carinthia region, was built at the Lurssen yard in 2002 and had a major refit in 2005.

Powered by four MTU 1163 Diesels, she can reach a maximum speed of 26 knots with a cruising speed of 22 knots.

Known for her luxurious design by Tim Heywood, Carinthia VII accommodates 12 guests and 25 crew members.
