The yacht Lady A was built as Southern Cross at Sterling Yachts in Japan. She is designed by Jon Bannenberg, who was responsible for both her interior and exterior.
She was delivered in 1986 to her then owner Alan Bond. Alan Bond was an Australian entrepreneur, active in real estate, energy and media.
In 1992 he was declared bankrupt and in 1997 he was convicted of fraud en sentenced to seven years in prison.
At the time of his death in 2015, his net worth was estimated at more than US$ 200 million.
Following his financial problems Southern Cross was sold and renamed Indian Princess, and was probably owned by Vijay Mallya.
Later her name was changed back to Southern Cross and in 2012 she was sold again and named Emihar Chios, while owned by Greek shipping tycoon Harry Vafias, CEO of Stealth Gas.
In 2015 she was purchased by Lord Alan Sugar and named Lady A.
