As a young man he bounced from job to job. For a short period he attended the University of Chicago. But he dropped out after the first semester.
He started working as a programmer. And in a few years he founded his own company named Software Development Labs.
The name Oracle finds its origin in a database for the CIA, which Ellison built in that period. When IBM adobted the Oracle database for its own mainfraim the company grew quickly.
The company is now one of the world's largest enterprise software companies. Oracle is based in Silicon Valley.
In 2019 Ellison hold a 22.5% stake in Oracle, which makes him one of the richest persons in the world. He has an estimated net worth of US$ 66 billion (May 2019).
He is also known as a succesful real estate developer. And he has a large art collection.
His base salary is just US$ 1.00 per year. But his total compensation in (stock) options is around US$ 45 million per year. He owns 1.1 billion stocks in Oracle.
The Oracle CEO receives an annual dividend of more than US$ 500 million per year. These amounts sufficiently support his expensive lifestyle with yachts and private jets.
He is an active philanthropist through his own Ellision foundation. In 2018 he donated US$ 200 million to the University of Southern California. It was to establish a research center for the treatment and prevention of Cancer.
During the 1970’s he worked on a database for Ampex Corporation. This inspired him to found the ‘Software Development Laboratories’ in 1977.
SDL was later renamed Oracle after its successful product. This was the Oracle database.

Ellison is the owner of a Gulfstream G650 private jet with registration N817GS. Ellison bought the jet in 2015. The G650 has a list price of US$ 75 million. The aircraft can accommodate 14 passengers.
The jet is registered to the company Wing and a Prayer Inc. The company is owned by Ellison. Ownership is confirmed in this court document. Although the case relates to an older jet also owned by Ellison.
Also registered to Wing and Prayer are a Bombardier Global Express. This jet was built in 2000. She has registration N17GX.
And there is a Cessna 525 Citation with registration N417C. The Cessna was built in 2010.

Ellison actually sold Rising Sun, as he considered her too large. She is unable to access interesting yachting destinations. He replaced her with the ‘smaller’ 88 meter Mushashi. The yacht is used as support vessel at the america cup.
The yacht Katana was built by Blohm Voss as Eco for the Mexican media billionaire Emillio Azcarraga. He was founder of Televisa.
Azcarrage died in 1997. He actually died on board his luxury yacht near Miami. His family sold the yacht after a few years.
