Gordon Butch Stewart was the founder of Sandals Resort. He was born on July 6, 1941, on Jamaica. He died on January 4, 2021. He was married to Jill Stewart. They had 8 children.

He started his business by selling fish to local hotels while fishing in a homemade canoe. His first serious income he realized with trading, and importing airconditioning systems to Jamaica. With the profits, he bought a hotel.

Sandals Resorts

Sandals is an operator of all-inclusive resorts, based in Jamaica. It was founded in 1981. It all started with the Sandals Montego Bay and the Sandals Carlisle. The group now has 16 resorts in the Caribbean and more than 10,000 employees.

Butch also founded Beaches Resorts, which operates 3 resorts. Beaches Resorts is awarded the title World’s Leading Family Resort Brand.

Butch’ son Adam Stewart is chairman of  Sandals Resorts International (SRI),

Stewart also founded the Jamaica Observer newspaper, which became the fourth national newspaper of Jamaica.
