Rybolovlev is an avid art collector. In 2018 he made headlines. He sold the Salvator Mundi painting made by Leonardo da Vinci. That was at Christie’s in New York for US$450.3 million. The buyer was the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia.
Later it became clear that the UAE Minister of Presidential Affairs Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan was bidding against the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia.
Their bidding power increased the purchase price significantly. Sheikh Mansour later gifted his yacht Topaz to the Crown Prince. To offset the high bidding price.
The Most Expensive Divorce Ever
In 2014 a Swiss court ordered Rybolovlev to pay his ex-wife Elena Rybolovleva $4.5 billion. Which was named ‘the world’s most expensive divorce settlement’.
However, in 2015 the court had significantly reduced the settlement. Down to an amount of $600 million. And we were told that later that year the couple had reached an amicable divorce settlement.
Controversy
In 2018 he was charged by Monaco prosecutors in relation to a probe into corruption and influence peddling. His La Belle Epoque penthouse was raided by Monaco police.
He was accused of using his wealth and power to influence local officials to have Swiss businessman Yves Bouvier arrested. He pushed for Bouvier’s prosecution. It was related to art purchases. Rybolovlev’s lawyers said they regret the breach of confidentiality of the inquiry.
