In 1999 the ship was converted into an exploration superyacht by Vosper Thornycroft, adding a flight deck and a helicopter hangar. In 2008 her exterior was refitted. Superyacht Akula is equipped with four Vosper stabilizers that assist rough weather heli operations allowing comfortable landings in up to around Force 6 weather conditions.
